Backup withholding occurs when the business information on your Payroc account doesn't match the information that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) holds. This includes mismatches with the following:
- Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) - Your business's tax identification number. This is either an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for registered businesses or a Social Security Number (SSN) for sole proprietors.
- Legal business name - Your legal business name.
- Legal business address - Your legal business address.
When this happens, the IRS can require Payroc to withhold 24% of your settlement funds and send the withheld funds to them. To stop backup withholding, you need to update your business information on your Payroc account so that it matches the IRS records.
To update your business information, complete the following steps:
- Call us at (888) 477-4500 to identify the information that you need to update.
- Download Form W-9 from the IRS website.
- Complete the form.
- Email the completed form to cs@payroc.com. Include your merchant ID, business name, and the reason for your request.
